    The Apologetic Doorbell

    — rings, then immediately regrets it

    Plate II

    Abstract

The Apologetic Doorbell (Cat. MAI–004) addresses an oversight long endured by domestic threshold-marking devices: the absence of post-annunciatory contrition⁸. Upon depression of the actuator, the unit emits a single brass tone of conventional brightness, followed within 0.4 seconds by a markedly softer murmur of regret, calibrated to the precise pitch of an embarrassed cough. In repeated trials, 87% of visitors reported feeling that they, in fact, had imposed.

    Critical Reception

I have stopped answering the door. It seems unkind to make it ring twice.

It rang for me once. I have thought of little else since.
